The women of LSU begin their NCAA tournament against UNC-Asheville (No. 14) this Saturday, March 17, 2007.  The game will take place at the University of Texas in Austin and will be televised on ESPN2.  Tip off is slated for 10 pm. EST (time is approximate).  This is UNC-Asheville's first trip to the big dance but will be the second time these two schools meet.  The Bulldogs first played LSU in Baton Rouge during the 1999-2000 season and lost 36-91.

The winner of this game will play the winner of the Xavier/West Virginia game on Monday, March 19 in the second round.

A few facts about UNC-Asheville

The Bulldogs picked up their first ever Big South Conference championship with an exciting 67-57 title-game victory over second-seeded Radford.  The win was Asheville's sixth straight and raised its record to 21-11. It is the most wins by a Bulldog team since the 1983-84 season.

The 2006-07 Bulldogs have broken six school team records and this team has scored more points, blocked more shots, made and taken more free throws, and made and taken more three-pointers than any other Bulldogs team including the 1984 NAIA National Championship team.

Players to watch:

Brittany Hendley has broken the school record for most three-pointers in a career and is two treys shy of the single-season record.

Amanda Elder (Big South Tournament MVP) has had four double-doubles in the last five games and is leads the team in rebounding.

Interesting Tidbit:  Coach Betsy Blose now in her fifth year, came to Asheville in the spring of 2002 and inherited a team that went 1-27 the previous year. The Bulldogs finished 3-25 in her first season but have had four straight winning seasons since then.
