LSU vs. Jackson State Recap

Everyone knew going in that the Lady Tigers would come away victorious; it was just a matter of whether they would be clad in LSU purple and gold or whether they would be dressed in Jackson State blue and white. Other than sharing the same mascot name, there wasn’t much else similar about these two teams, as the LSU Lady Tigers pounced on the Lady Tigers of Jacksonville State by a score of 66-32. The big news is that Sylvia Fowles did not add to her total of 82 career double-doubles, but she did manage 16 points and 7 boards in only 23 minutes of play.
With LSU up 53-18 with 12 minutes remaining in the second half, LSU’s Van Chancellor was able to pull his starters and keep them fresh for Monday night’s second round matchup with Marist, a 76-57 winner over DePaul. No starter played more than 23 minutes in the game for LSU, and when the wholesale substitutions began, the bench went on to close out the game by scoring 28 points. With no starter taller than 5-10, things were bound to get ugly for Jackson State, and the height differential showed, with LSU outscoring them in the paint an astounding 44-10 and outrebounding them 45-29. LSU held J-State to 23% from the field on 12-of-52 shooting. LSU also held the Lady Tigers to 11 first-half points, which tied an NCAA record for fewest points in a half.
Despite the impressive stats, coach Chancellor wasn’t entirely pleased with his team’s efforts. LSU didn’t take care of the ball, committing 22 turnovers, which matched their assist total dead even. J-State has to be given credit for at least a portion of that; they scrambled and hustled, scrapping for the ball, and tallied 15 steals for the game. Besides Big Syl’s 16 points, Mesha Williams came off the bench to score 14 in 17 minutes of play, and Quianna Chaney added points. J-State had no double-digit scorers. Gabrielle Jones was Jacksonville State’s leading scorer, coming off the bench to score 7, and C Easley pulled down a game-high 11 boards.
Up next for LSU: a Monday night, Mar. 24 second round game against Marist.
