South Carolina/Savannah State Recap

Tigers Mauled By Gamecocks, 86-47
Despite a steady stream of players lost to attrition, and a very serious effort on the part of the Savannah State Lady Tigers, the South Carolina Gamecocks dominated the backboards and sent the Tigers home with a 86-47 loss.
Senior forward Lakesha Tolliver was not even dressed out today, reportedly she was sick and listening to the game on the radio in the comfort of her room. However, the team gathered itself and made up for her absence. Brionna Dickerson led the way on the offensive end, scoring 18 points on 5 of 10 shooting, 2 for 2 from behind the arc and 6 of 8 free throws. She also pulled down 5 rebounds for a terrific all-around effort. Jordan Jones was right behind her with 16 points on 6 for 10 shooting, 4 of 8 from the 3-point line and 6 rebounds. Jordan played only 24 minutes today, due to leaving the game with an injury early in the second half, after colliding with one of the Tigers and going down in a heap. She left the playing arena for a short time, then returned to the bench, walking under her own power. We will await official word, but it looks like she is all right.
Also in double figures for the Gamecocks were freshman forward Jewel May, who scored 14 points in 18 minutes of play, a career best total for her. She was only 3-10 from the field, but shot 8-10 from the free throw line and had 4 rebounds, 3 on the offensive end. She also contributed 2 steals and a blocked shot, much to the delight of her family in the stands: mother, aunt and grandmother were in attendance today.
Demetress Adams quietly added a double-double, with 11 points and 12 rebounds for the day, along with 5 steals and 3 blocked shots. Senior center Ilona Burgrova also had another nice game with 7 points and 10 rebounds.
The Tigers stayed close for the first 10 minutes of the first half, but just didn’t have the depth to stay with the Gamecocks for the duration. For the Tigers, Ivy Smith and Patrice “Nikki” Robinson led the way with 18 and 14 points, respectively. Smith also had 7 rebounds and 6 steals, but turned the ball over 10 times. Unfortunately for the Tigers, they didn’t have any other effective weapons in their arsenal and their two stars were simply not enough to compete with the balanced, and deeper, Gamecock attack. A 21-4 run by the Gamecocks to end the first half left them with a comfortable 39-20 lead and the luxury of providing a lot of playing time for some players coming off of the bench for the final pre-conference tune-up game. Ten active players were available for this game; all ten played and all ten scored.
Next up, Southeastern Conference play begins on Thursday with a road trip to Alabama.
