Georgia vs. Southern Cal Preview

The Cynthia Cooper-Dyke connection continues ...
The last time the Georgia Lady Bulldogs met the Southern Cal Trojans (USC) was in during the 1985-86 season. While the game ended in a loss (70-67), it was the most successful team Georgia had to date. The Lady Bulldogs spent the ENTIRE season ranked as No. 2 or No.3 in the nation and ended with a 30-2 record. Their only other loss that year was in post season to the Lady Volunteers of Tennessee (85-82). Southern Cal then took down the Lady Vols (83-59) in the Final Four semi-finals...the winner that year was Texas over Southern Cal by a score of 97-81.
Now 5-0, the Georgia Lady Bulldogs blew away Prairie View (78-44) in round one of the Junkanoo Jam yesterday. Senior forward, Tasha Humphrey led the way scoring the first nine points and ended with a double-double (15 points/12 rebounds) in only 21 minutes of play. Reigning SEC Freshman of the Year, Ashley Houts contributed 13 points going 6 of 9 from the floor while senior Megan Darrah provided 10 points of her own to the tally. Coach Landers played a total of 11 Lady Bulldogs and each of them scored in the game. "I thought we did a reasonably good job on offense and also at stopping
the things they were throwing at us on the defensive end. Every lineup we put out there did a nice job of continuing to do what we wanted," head coach
Andy Landers said.
USC leads Geogria in the series 3-1 and comes into this contest having beaten the Virgina Tech Hokies 65-64 in round one play. In the first half, after giving up six turnovers by traveling, USC watched as the Hokies started off with a 10-2 run. In fact it looked like it was going to be a Hokie dokie day as USC trailed most of the first half in double-digits. With less than two minutes to play, the Women of Troy down 35-20 went on a 7-0 run to cut the Hokies' lead to 35-27 as they headed into the locker room.
In the second half, the Hokies continued to ward off the Trojans with four of their nine players scoring in double figures. Leading by as much as 15 points with almost ten minutes left in the game, the Hokies witnessed an 11-2 run by USC, taking the lead at 63-62 with 1:22 left in the game. After Andrea Barbour completed two free throw shots, the Hokies regained the lead 64-63. But that wasn't enough as Camille LeNoir made what turned out to be the winning basket as her layup was good leaving 42 seconds in the game. A turnover by USC gave Virginia Tech the ball in the final seconds as Lindsay Brigg put up a trey before the buzzer only to have it hit the rim and give the Trojans the victory. This was the first loss for the Virginia Hokies this season.
