LSU Dominates Michigan State in 64-41 Win

In a game that was never really close, the LSU Lady Tigers totally dominated the Michigan State Spartans by a score of 64-41 behind the stellar play of senior center Sylvia Fowles. Fowles led all scorers in the game with 25, hitting 10-of-20 from the field and a perfect 5-of-5 from the line. In addition, Fowles pulled down 10 rebounds to go along with 4 steals and 2 blocked shots. This was Fowles’ first double-double of the 2007-2008 season and the 63rd of her career. Many had expected an epic battle in the middle between Fowles and the Spartan’s 6’9” sophomore center Allyssa DeHaan, but that battle never really materialized. DeHaan pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and had 4 blocks, but was held to 8 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the field. The only double-figure scorers for the Spartans were two reserves off the bench: 5’4” senior guard Courtney Davidson made 3-of-5 three pointers to lead Michigan State with 12 points, and 6’1” freshman forward Taja Wilson scored 11. LSU held MSU’s starting 5 to a total of 16 points on 6-of-24 shooting for the game.
LSU came out on fire, jumping to a 15-0 lead, before MSU got their first bucket of the game at the 12:26 mark of the first half, a 3-pointer by Davidson. The Lady Tigers continued to build their lead behind the stellar play of Fowles and senior guard Quianna Chaney, and led 32-14 at the half. The half-time stats pretty much summed up the anticlimactic battle between the two centers: Fowles 21 points, DeHaan 0. In fact, Fowles had outscored the entire Michigan State team in the first half. Fowles did not log as many minutes in the second half (nor as many points) but the game was never in doubt as LSU stretched the lead to as much as 33. Chaney finished with 14 points and dished 4 assists for LSU. LSU head coach Van Chancellor had this to say after the game: “When you start out a game and you’re up 15 to zero that’s a heck of a start. We just got better and better as the game went along defensively.”
LSU next faces the winner of the other Pre-Season WNIT semi-final, a Friday night matchup between #3 Maryland and #23 Notre Dame. LSU will travel to either College Park, MD or South Bend, IN for the tournament final on Sunday afternoon. Game time is not yet set.
