Alabama’s Freshman Class: 2007-2008

Coach Stephany Smith has signed four newcomers to the Crimson Tide for the 2007-2008 season. Comparing them to last year’s class of 6 freshmen, she said, "They are as talented, if not more, than the class we just brought in. These players are ll very versatile, so we feel that with this group we are covering all our bases."

Caitlin Hollifield, a 6-0 forward, comes from Powell, Tennessee. She led Powell High School to the state semifinals as a sophomore and to the regional finals as a junior. She was a Class AAA All-State honoree as a junior, as well as a Tennessee Sportswriter Association first team all-state performer. She is a 3-time Street and Smith honorable mention All-American and was rated the #48 player in the nation, according to scout.com. Coach Stephany Smith describes Caitlin as a "fighter and a winner”and an “old-school kind of kid who will run through a wall for you."

Varisia Raffington comes from Florida High School in Tallahassee, Florida. A 5-10 forward, she led her team to back-to-back Class 3A state titles in her junior and senior years. She was also named the championship MVP, both years. Raffington averaged 10 points and 5 rebounds during her senior season and was a Florida Sportswriter Association 3A first team All-State honoree. A post player in high school, she is versatile enough to play any position. Coach Smith says that “she will continue to blossom and get better and better."

Daleisha Carn is a 6-0 point guard who played for Englewood High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Carn is a four-star recruit, according to Floridahoops.com and is listed among the top regional recruits by HoopGurlz.  Carn averaged 17 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals per game as a senior. An opposing coach referred to her as "the best all-around player in the state."  Carn was named to the Times-Union All-First Coast first team for 3 consecutive years and is the Player of the Year for 2007. She was also named to the Florida Sportswriter Association Class 5A All-State second team as a senior. Coach Smith described her as "an amazing athlete" and "a lot of fun to watch."

Tierney Jenkins is a 6-1 forward from Wilson Central High School in Lebanon, Tennessee. Jenkins is ranked #162 in the Blue Star Top 200 of 2007.  Jenkins helped her team to a Class AAA state title as a junior. She was a Class AAA All-State team selection and a Tennessee Sportswriter Association Class AAA selection, as a senior. She was also a finalist for 2007 Division II Miss Basketball.  Coach Smith describes Jenkins as a "workhorse" with a variety of abilities and “the kind of player that opponents have a hard time playing against."

Possibly, the toughest task for all 4 recruits will be finding some playing time in their freshman year. The Crimson Tide returns 8 players who saw between 10 and 25 minutes per game, last season.
