Iowa State v. Georgia Preview

by Kel Kyle

Posted: March 19th, 2007 @ 6:57pm

The Georgia Lady Bulldogs need not only to show up, but actively participate offensively if they want to continue to be on the dance card. Tonight they face #6 Seed Iowa State Cyclones whose name pretty much sums up their style of basketball.

If you'll recall, in the uga-uga-ugly first round game against Belmont, Georgia held them to 20.4 percent shooting winning by a score of 53-36. Tasha Humphrey will need to score more than NINE points this time around to get these dogs through to round three. Coach Andy Landers is concerned about the Cyclones' 3-point attack. "At one point against Texas A&M they had 43 points and 30 of them came from 3s, so we get the picture," Landers said.

Iowa State out shot their first round opponent Washington 79-60.  Did you know that Iowa State is 17-0 when it tallies at least 70 points?  What makes it dicey?  The Bulldogs have surrendered 70 or more points six times this season.

Players to Watch:

Georgia junior forward Tasha Humphrey, named to the All-Southeastern Conference team for the third consecutive year while averaging 16 points and eight rebounds this season.

Iowa State's sophomore forward Nicky Wieben is ISU’s best post defender and has a school season record of 62 blocks.  Wieben scored 18 points and was 8-of-11 from the field overall in the Washington first round game.

Interesting Tidbits:

Georgia:  Coach Andy Landers has recruited Minneapolis prep stars Brandi Decker and Tracy Henderson, who led the Bulldogs to two Final Four appearances in 1995 and '96, and Rochester twins Kelly and Coco Miller (1997-2001) are among Georgia's career leaders in scoring, assists and 3-pointers.  "Minnesota has been a sweet state for Georgia basketball," Landers said.

Minnesota Gopher's women's basketball coach Pam Borton on Georgia's Tasha Humphrey: "...Tasha is a very talented player that's tough to guard and extremely versatile. When Georgia had some injuries to post players last year, she did a great job carrying the load inside. She can play every position on the floor, but she's naturally a three. She's fun to watch, but not to play against."

Iowa:  On Sunday, Iowa State went through a light 90-minute practice that served to keep the Cyclones upbeat. To finish things off, they took halfcourt shots until someone made one - Anna Florzak did so on the team's 20th attempt. Then the players divided into two groups for a 3-point shooting contest in which the first group to 10 was the winner. The whole point was to keep the team loose.

LAST MEETING: Georgia 89, Iowa St. 71, on March 22, 1999
