The Mississippi State Bulldogs did not play like the underdogs that the NCAA Selection Committee considered them to be and ousted the 6th seeded Texas Longhorns, this afternoon, to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 71-63 victory.
Alexis Rack led the team with 20 points (including 13/13 at the free throw line) and 4 assists. Teammate Chanel Mokango added 15 points and Armelie Lumanu and Mary Kathryn Govero also scored in double figures with 11 points apiece. Lumanu also had 10 rebounds and was 5 for 5 from the free throw line. In fact, as a team, the Bulldogs shot 95% from the charity stripe–an astounding statistic and a major factor in their play that may have won the game for them.
Texas fell behind early and then put on a charge that had them in a position to win the game in the last couple of minutes, but were unable to sustain their momentum as the Bulldogs capitalized on their free throw chances to put the game out of reach. Texas had three players in double figures, led by Earnesia Williams with 17 points, Brittainey Raven with 15 and Kathleen Nash with 11. Ashley Gayle added a team-high 7 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Bulldogs.
Mississippi State will face Ohio State on Monday in a second-round game in Columbus, Ohio.
