It was the same old story, with the Gamecocks coming out of the gate slow (Vanderbilt came out slow, too, but found their pace much quicker) and never really challenging the Commodores. Before the first half was over, they had fallen behind by as much as 24 points. At the half, the deficit was 23 points.
Ilona Burgrova led the Gamecocks with 11 points and Samone Kennedy had 10. Demetress Adams was unable to contribute much to the scoring effort, with only 4 points, but had 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocked shots. In general, the Gamecocks’ shooting was dismal. They shot only 23% in the first half and 39% in the second half, to average only 30% for the entire game. At the same time, Vanderbilt shot 42% in the first half and 56% in the second half, to average 50% for the game. The Commodores took 9 more shots than the Gamecocks, overall, and hit nearly twice as many field goals. Still, despite all of those woes, the Gamecocks played the Vanderbilt team close to even, in the second half. The second half results were 41-34, in favor of the Commodores–another recurring theme, as the Gamecocks fall into a hole in the first half and make a valiant effort to climb out, but can’t quite get there.
Vanderbilt was led by an extremely balanced scoring effort, with 5 players in double figures. Merideth Marsh had 12 points, followed by Jennifer Risper, Lauren Leuders and Jessica Mooney with 11 points and Christina Wirth with 10 points. Rebounding was balanced, too, with Liz Sherwood leading the way with 7 rebounds, followed by Risper, Jence Rhoads and Hannah Tuomi with 5 rebounds apiece. It was basically a textbook performance on teamwork for the Vanderbilt team and it paid off with a lopsided win.
The Gamecocks will take the court again, hoping for much better results, on Sunday afternoon against the Ole Miss Lady Rebels. It is “Think Pink” day at the Colonial Center, highlighting breast cancer awareness, and fans are asked to wear pink to the game. The first 500 fans to bring back their Gamecocks piggy banks with change to donate for breast cancer research will receive a “Think Pink” T-shirt. So wear pink, bring your spare change and back up the Gamecocks as they search for another SEC win. Tipoff is at 3 pm.
