Critical Homestand for the Gamecocks Looms

The Kentucky Wildcats come to the Colonial Center Thursday night and present the Gamecocks with a difficult task in what is becoming a critical “must win” situation. A slow start has landed the Gamecocks in last place in the conference and Kentucky, despite a very ordinary 9-9 overall record, is in third place with a 3-1 SEC record. Kentucky split games last week, losing to No.2 Tennessee and beating No. 20 Auburn. It was Kentucky’s first win over a ranked opponent this season. Kentucky is led by Samantha Mahoney and Sarah Elliott, averaging 14 and 11 points per game, respectively. The Wildcats, who were under .500 in the non-conference season, have improved their record since conference play began. However, they are only 2-2 in away games.

The Gamecocks continue to be led by Jordan Jones, Demetress Adams and Brionna Dickerson, averaging 12.9, 11.8 and 10.7 points per game. Adams leads the team in rebounding, while senior center Ilona Burgrova is second.

This is a crucial game for the South Carolina team. There are 10 games remaining, after Kentucky, and 5 of the teams they will play either are currently ranked or were ranked earlier in the season. It won’t get any easier and every home game is a must-win situation. After the early losses, it is also very important to find a way to win a couple of away games, too. But first, they need to take care of business against the Kentucky Wildcats.

Tipoff is at 7 pm at the Colonial Center.

Editor’s Note: This game will be televised on FOXS for those with DISH sports package, that’s channel 420.
