The Lady Tigers lost a heartbreaker today, falling by just a field goal to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the closing seconds of the game.
Their last meeting, in the 2007 Final Four semifinals, was a lopsided affair, 59-35, controlled by Rutgers from the outset. Sylvia Fowles was held to just 5 points and 7 rebounds in that contest, the second worst scoring total of her career. She was determined to have a better showing in this rematch and posted the 66th double-double of her career in the losing effort with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
In this meeting, Erica White sat on the bench much of the first half, in trouble early with two fouls. Leblanc, Chaney and Fowles were the only Tigers to score in the first half. They had only 3 points from their bench for the entire game.
Both teams employed their signature defensive toughness as Rutgers had 20 turnovers and LSU committed 19 in the game. LSU did win the battle of the boards 29-35. This was a focus for LSU coming into the game, as they had been uncharacteristically on the short end of that stat their last two outings.
LSU had opportunities in this game but 5-11 shooting from the free throw line combined with a meager 32.8% shooting from the floor could not get the job done despite an excellent defensive effort on the floor. Quianna Chaney was the game's leading scorer with 16 points.
Rutgers had their own difficulties on offense. They only shot 37.7% from the floor as a team, led by Kia Vaughn with 13 points and Essence Carson with 5 rebounds.
In the end Rutgers, up by just one, forced a turnover by the Lady Tigers who then had no choice but to foul Epiphanny Prince with 16 seconds left in the game. Prince made one of two free throws to put the Scarlet Knights up by 2. In the final possession of the game, Quianna Chaney put up a three point attempt that was off the mark. Allison Hightower was able to corral the rebound but was unable to get a shot off before time expired.
