Knoxville, Tenn. - Tennessee Lady Vol hoopster Candace Parker has been tabbed as the SEC Freshman of the Week according to a Monday release by the conference office. The award is Parker's league-leading third rookie honor of the season.
The Naperville, Ill., native averaged 11.0 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 2.3 apg and 1.3 spg in the three Lady Vol victories last week over Old Dominion, South Carolina and No. 7 Connecticut. Parker shot 50 percent from the field and 70 percent from the line during the three-game span to improve Tennessee to 15-0. The opening of the season is UT's third best start to a campaign behind the 1997-98 (39-0) and 1994-95 (16-0) seasons.
The 6'4" redshirt freshman ranks in the top-14 in the conference in eight categories and is the top rookie in five of those. She ranks second in blocked shots (2.3 bpg), third in defensive rebounding (6.0 drpg), sixth in rebounding (8.3 rpg), seventh in scoring (14.2 ppg), 11th in steals (1.8 spg), 11th in offensive rebounding (2.3 orpg), 13th in field goal percentage (.524) and 14th in free throw percentage (.795).
The No.1-ranked Lady Vols (15-0, 1-0) return to the hardwood on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Thompson-Boling Arena when they play host to conference rival No. 17/18-ranked Georgia (11-3, 2-0).
