Mississippi State v. Iowa Preview

by Kel Kyle, SECWB.com

Posted: November 22nd, 2007 @ 12:08pm

Thanksgiving in Cancun, Mexico is not a bad way to start a holiday.  But the turkey will have to wait until the game is over as the Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs (4-0) meet the Iowa Hawkeyes (3-0) in the first of two games at the 2007 Caribbean Challenge.

MSU Head Coach Sharon Fanning and Iowa Head Coach Lisa Bluder's teams meet for the first time with tip-off set for 12:30 p.m. CT.  Fanning has a career record of 521-387 in 33 years with a 198-161 record at MSU.  Coach Bluder begins her eighth season at Iowa with a career record of 486-229 (23 seasons) and 130-87 at Iowa.

LAST TIME OUT

The Lady Bulldgos defeated Mercer 89-51 in their last game, with five players scoring in double digits.  Sophomore, Alexis Rack led the way with 21 points.  Tysheka Grimes (sophomore), juniors Donnisha Tate and Marneshia Richard added 11 each with Bethany Washington, sophomore, bringing in 10.  A third career double-double and career-high five assists by Grimes pretty much guaranteed the W.

In their last outing, the Hawkeyes defeated Northern Iowa, 77-67.  Leading by 14 points in the second half, Northern Iowa not only caught up but was up by one-point with 6:30 to go.  But thanks to the charity stripe skills of Iowa, they were able to outscore Northern Iowa 27-14.  Junior, Kristi Smth is the leading scorer for the Hawkeyes, averaging 11.7 points per game.

JUST THE FACTS

Under coach Fanning, the Lady Bulldogs are 40-18 during the month of November (74-38 all-time) with six of the losses coming against nationally ranked teams.  In non-conference play, MSU is 131-65 (.668) under Fanning and 363-268 (.559) overall.  With a W today, the Lady Bulldogs will be 5-0 for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.

WHAT'S UP NEXT

The Lady Bulldogs face No. 10 Oklahoma (0-2) on Friday at 1 p.m. CT.
