Georgia vs. Georgia Southern Preview

Coming off it's second game and win of the season, the Lady Bulldogs meet Georgia Southern, an extremely competitive team who almost had the Dawgs number last year in Statesboro, GA. I remember that game well, I don't bite my nails, but I did pace a lot and cover my eyes at times, I must admit. The GSU Lady Eagles knocked down a total of 13 three-pointers, equaling the most ever by a Lady Bulldog opponent. Add to that, Georgia wasn't able to take the lead until Megan Darrah scored a three-point play with only 1:57 left in the game. It's amazing I didn't have cardiac arrest. Thankfully, in the end Georiga prevailed by a score of 75-71.
Even though the Dawgs record is 19-9 against Georgia Southern, they know they need to bring their A+ game if they want to continue that streak. But with all the players from last year's roster returning to GS, it's going to take a lot of ball care and focus to win this game. When asked about the match up, Andy Landers said, "they've always played us well. ... Last year was one of a number of games where I felt like they played well enough to beat us. We were fortunate to get out of there with a win."
PROBABLE STARTERS GEORGIA:
Reigning SEC Freshman of the Year, Ashley Houts is expected to start and is tied for the lead in PPG for the Lady Bulldogs at 17 so far this season. Houts played only 28 minutes in the Richmond game, and was just shy of setting her first double/double career at UGA. But she made the most of those minutes by scoring 17 points, 5 steals, tied for game-high rebounding honors with 9 boards and also dished out 4 assists. "What a line she had, coach Andy Landers said.
Joining Houts is the other leader in PPG, senior Tasha Humphrey. Humphrey is only 10 points away from the No. 8 position among the Lady Dogs' career leading scorers. She's scored in double figures 84 of 95 games played as a Georgia Lady Bulldog. Rounding out the starters should be freshman Angela Puleo and seniors Megan Darrah and Rebecca Rowsey.
PROBABLE STARTERS GEORGIA SOUTHERN:
Georgia Southern will probably start two Georgia natives, sophomores Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, GA) and Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, GA). Junior Ashley Rivens and seniors Shawnda Atwood and Chequilla Jessie. Whitney scored 10 points in last year's game with Rivens scoring 13. Off the bench expect to see Tiffany Brown who scored 18 points in last year's match up as well as Ashely Melson also contributing 11 points.
Next Up: Temple at UGA, Friday, November 16th at 7:00 p.m.
