With the graduation of key players Carla Thomas, Dee Davis and Caroline Williams, the 2007-2008 edition of Vanderbilt women’s basketball has a new look. But the results looked very familiar: a dominating win against an over-matched opponent. Vandy’s Halloween night exhibition game against Cumberland University proved to be no treat for the visiting NAIA team from nearby Lebanon, TN as the Commodores rolled to a 104-43 win. Vanderbilt had five double-digit scorers, led by Liz Sherwood and Tina Wirth with 16 points each. Jessica Mooney added 14, and Amber Norton and Jen Risper scored 12 and 10 points respectively. All 12 players on the roster saw action in the game, and freshman Jence Rhoads led all players with 5 steals.
Sophomore guard Merideth Marsh ran the point masterfully, tallying seven assists with no turnovers, while distributing the ball evenly amongst her teammates. The Commodores forced Cumberland into 33 turnovers, while only committing 10 for the game.
Vanderbilt, ranked #17 in the USA TODAY/ESPN preseason Coaches Poll, concludes their pre-season tune-up with an exhibition game Monday evening, Nov. 5 against Anderson University. Game time is set for 5:30 pm CST at Memorial Gym and is a double-header with the Commodore men’s team. Vanderbilt kicks off regular season play on Friday, November 9 at 7 pm against the University of Alabama - Birmingham.
