On Friday, April 13, Carla Berry resigned from LSU (and coaching) with plans to pursue career options in private business. Berry, mostly recently known as the whistle blower for first alerting LSU officials about Pokey Chatman's alleged improper conduct with past players, has been with LSU for seven years. Prior to coaching she shared playing time with fellow teammate Chatman at LSU (1988-1992). Berry was hired as an assistant coach for LSU in 2000 along with who else? That's right, Pokey Chatman.
In a statement released by the university, Berry said "I have enjoyed my years at LSU as a player and a coach, and I have memories I will cherish for a lifetime. I am excited about the future of LSU women's basketball, and I know the Lady Tigers will do great things with our new head coach, Van Chancellor."
Shortly after
Van Chancellor was hired as the head coach for LSU, he said he had no desire to change the coaching staff at LSU, pretty much guaranteeing Berry a job regardless of what had transpired. When asked about Berry's stepping down, Chancellor stressed he had nothing to do with it. "It was something she decided well before I accepted this position, and I appreciate her candor regarding her intentions. Her contributions, particularly in the area of recruiting, have been invaluable to the success of Lady Tiger basketball. I have great respect for her integrity and dedication to LSU, especially the student-athletes. We wish her well in her future endeavors."
Judy Southard, (senior associate AD at LSU), said Berry had played an integral role in building the LSU program to an elite status and was a major part of taking the Tigers to four straight Final Fours. "Carla has served LSU well, as both a student-athlete and as a member of our coaching staff...she will always be a part of the LSU family and we wish her all the best."
